Past Activities/Achievement/Success Stories

  • Conducted a research project entitled “Thyroid Status of Population in Greater Dinajpur”.
  • Participated in the National Scientific and Technology Week every year and obtained prizes.
  • Published many research articles in indexed journals at home and abroad.
  • Developed a reporting software named Quick Report.

Activities of the Centre

Research (R&D) Projects

  1. Name of the project : Study and Evaluation of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) of the Population in Grater Dinajpur.
  2. Objectives of the Project : To evaluate the thyroid status of the school going children of this region by estimating thyroid hormone, urinary iodine excretion level and clinical evaluation.
    1. Starting date : 2001
    2. Completion date : 2003

Both Diagnostic and Therapeutic services are available here.

Diagnostic:

Both In-vivo and In-vitro techniques are used in this center for diagnosis of diseases.

  1. In-vivo technique: The following tests are performed here for diagnosis using this technique.
    1. Thyroid Uptake: This test is performed with thyroid uptake system to determine the function of thyroid gland.
    2. Nuclear Imaging: Disease of bone, brain, liver, Kidney, thyroid gland etc. are detected by taking images of the respective organs with Single Head SPECT and gamma camera.
    3. Renogram: this test is performed with SPECT to determine the functional characteristics of kidneys.
  2. In-vitro technique: Thyroid related hormones (T3, T4, TSH and FT4) are being estimated in the lab by Radio Immunoassay (RIA) technique with modern instruments.
  3. Ultrasonogram: Here color and conventional ultrasonogram on a wide range of organs and systems are performed.
  4. BMD test: This test is performed for assessing osteoporotic fractures.

Therapeutic:

  1. Radioactive Iodine (I­­-131) is used for Thyrotoxicosis.
  2. Sr-90 is used after Pterygium operation of eye.
National/International seminar, Workshop, training courses etc arranged so far or to be arranged collaboration with/without IAEA, MOST, BARC, ICTP, Universities etc.
  1. Arranged a training program for the students of the Dept. of Physics of Dinajpur govt. College entitled “Radioisotopes in Nuclear Medicine”.
  2. Arranged a scientific seminar on “Bone Mineral Densitometry”

Future plan/ Activities

  • Transfer of this center to newly developed Dinajpur Medical College Hospital campus
  • Provide more modern service to the thyroid disorder patient which is a major public health problem in this part of this country.
  • This centre is recently equipped with modern instrument like SPECT, Digital Thyroid Scanner, Color Doppler Ultrasound and modern RIA laboratory. We will provide more service to the people in future.
  • Establishment of a thyroid clinic with joint collaboration with Dinajpur Medical College.
  • Detection of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women by BMD instrument which is already established in this centre.
